My Bass, Vocal Technique & IVB’s Style

Since I am self taught, playing Bass is a wild ride for me. I know very little music theory, and barely know the notes on the neck. I can figure out notes if I have time to think about it, but for the most part while I play, I have no idea what I am doing. This is a good and bad thing. The good part is, every song or jam truly comes from feel, and what is inside me. I play by patterns, by ear, and by learning licks and using them in modified ways in all songs.

IVB is in it’s niche when we can improv during songs. Although we do this to a great degree during practice, we rarely find the right venues or setting while playing live to be the true jam band we really are. It’s unfortunate, because this is when we are at our best and I am at my best.

The chemistry of IVB is excellent. It helps that I was raised playing music and have been heavily influenced by my Dad. There are times when we play, it is scary how much we think alike. Bill brings a great feel to the band. We feed off of each other and the grooves are very deep and thick. It is a very “natural” feeling band. The structure is there, but it is very laid back and loose. We rarely play a song the exact same way twice. There is always something a little different. It keeps it real! Another thing that keeps it real is the fact that we use little to no effects or techno gadgets or samplings…What you hear is raw and real…. hence keeping it real!

The Vocals is another part of the equation that is fun for me. I have zero vocal training and just sing from my heart and soul. There are many better than me vocally, but you can bet your life, every song I sing comes from deep inside me…. from my soul. IVB has some two part harmony. Me and dad both sing lead on songs, when we are not singing lead we are singing backing vocals for the other.

Finally, there is something special about playing music. Those of you who play understand what I mean. It takes you to a different place. Not only do I get the joy of playing, but I also get the joy playing with my dad. There are many memories that will last for ever. That in itself may be the best part about playing music!
